Getting Out of the Office and Working from Home

working from homeI am in my mid 20s and began working in the corporate world at a very well known world wide corporation when I graduated at 22.  Although I’m still very young, I knew from the first day that the corporate world was not for me.  No one likes being at their job there, and if they appear to be happy then they are good actors.  I’ve been lucky enough to land a job at a comany that allows me to do something I like and do it from home full time.  It really is the best of both worlds.  It’s a good balance of job security and personal freedom.  Working from home certainly has its advantages, but there are also some cons that you should consider before taking the leap to working from home yourself.  Daniel Scocco at Daily Blog Tips has done an excellent post on the pros vs cons of working from home.  One pro that I would add to the list is that with gas prices beyond being out of control in the US, working from home saves a ton of money on gas.  Below is only a quick recap of Daniel’s post, so head over to DailyBlogTips.com for the full details.

Pros of Working from Home

  • Flexibility
  • No Boss
  • Its healthier
  • More family time
  • Freedom to work from anywhere

Cons of Working from Home

  • Its lonely
  • There are many distractions
  • Requires high level of discipline
  • You’re always in the same place
  • Tough to explain to people what it is you really do

From personal experience, I have to agree with every one of these points on both lists.  Are there any others you would add?

A few friends and relatives of mine have been working from home since mid 90’s. They work in oil and gas industry.

While the pay is good, I noticed that they are lonely and have no colleague. They never have the chance to have breakfast or lunch with the “guys”. You are correct in pointing out the loneliness part.

You are also correct to mentioned that these guys are disciplined. I see them get their jobs done all the time.

Thanks Azman,

It’s true it can be lonely during the day but at the same time you don’t have the distractions from other people that normally go along with being in the office. It’s definitely important to stay involved in other activities to maintain a social life and keep a separation from work and home.
