The first step in creating a successful blog is purchasing a domain name. There are options available that allow you to host your blog for free on a domain that you do not own such as Blogger.com. However, we are not looking for the shortcuts. Our goal is to create a blog that is as successful as it possibly can be. Purchasing your own domain name allows you to have complete control over the keywords used in the domain name which plays a huge role in terms of doing well in organic search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN.
Personally, I recommend using BLUEHOST.COM as your domain registrar. They have fair prices, amazing customer support, and offer some great benefits such as personalized email addresses, 1500 GB of Hosting Space and more. I’ve used them for a few years and never had a single problem.
When selecting your domain name be sure to follow these techniques as they will come into play down the road once you’re blog is up and running.
- Choose a domain name that is easy to remember
- Stick with using a .com instead of .net, .us, etc.
- Use keywords as the domain that are very specific to the topic your blog will be about.
- Use a keyword research tool such as Wordtracker or Keyword Descovery to find out which keywords in your niche are most popular
